One postdoctoral fellow position is available in the Structural Molecular Biology group at The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research (CPR – The appointment is a 1-year fulltime position available from 1 March 2019.
About CPR
Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research ( at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences (SUND), University of Copenhagen, performs basic and applied discovery research on human proteins of biomedical relevance. The Center comprises a wide range of expertise and resources, from in silico target identification, mass spectrometry based proteomics, structural biology, protein production and characterization to elucidation of various disease mechanisms.

The research project
The Structural Molecular Biology group led by Professor Guillermo Montoya works in the interface between biology, physics and chemistry and uses molecular biology, X-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy to dissect the working mechanisms of the macromolecules that constitute the cell’s machinery.
This project aims to define the molecular mechanisms of CRISPR-Cas effector complexes using primarily cryo-EM, combined with mutagenesis and functional assays.

Responsibilities will include
  • Management of the project day-to-day.
  • Protein expression and purification, structural studies using cryo-EM and other appropriate methods.
  • Model building, validation and interpretation of 3D structures.
  • Carry out collaborative projects with colleagues in partner research groups.
  • Act as a source of information and advice to other members of the group on scientific protocols and experimental techniques.
  • Keep up to date with the scientific literature relating to the project.
  • Collaborate in and contribute to the preparation of scientific reports and journal articles.
  • The candidate is required to have a PhD in relevant field.
Prior research experience with research areas involving structural biology.
  • Substantial experience with cryo-EM; carrying the project through the different stages of specimen preparation, negative stain and cryo-EM screening, data collection, assessment, processing, and interpretation using appropriate software packages.
  • Experience with other structural biology and biophysical methods such as X-ray crystallography, both experimentally and computationally.
  • Ability to manage the day-to-day running of a research project, including assisting the work of others, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Fluency in English and excellent communication skills (written and spoken).
Place of employment and work
The employment is at CPR (, University of Copenhagen, located in central Copenhagen. The research environment at CPR is vibrant, ambitious, and international, with approx. 30 different nationalities currently represented. The Center comprises modern laboratories and state-of-the-art facilities within protein science. Seminars with high-profile international speakers and regular internal research seminars are organized at CPR.

Terms of salary and employment
Salary, pension and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Academics Central organization. Currently, the monthly salary starts at 33,766 DKK/approx. 4,532 EUR plus a 17.1 % employer paid pension contribution.
