The Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences (PLEN)
strives to stimulate fundamental research and the synergy between basic and
applied research in biology and environmental science. The focus is on plants,
microorganisms, animals and the environment as a basis for sustainable
production of food and other biological products. Research and teaching cover
natural resources, agriculture, biotechnology and synthetic biology from the
molecular level to the ecosystem scale.
The research project is on
using new plant breeding technologies (NBT) for the main crops of commercial
interest. NBT are precision mutagenesis technologies, with the potential of
becoming the most revolutionizing breeding tool of the last decades. In the
development of NBT, the focus will be on traits of outmost importance for the
industrial partners, who operate in a highly competitive seed market.
For the regeneration, NBT has
moved from model plant to model lines in important crops. There is however
still a need to develop and refine these methods to be able to work with every
genotype which can go directly into the breeding of new varieties. In this
project, the focus will be to develop protocols for the genotypes most relevant
to the breeding companies.
There are different approaches
for regeneration of plants from protoplast, these will be compared to find ways
to decrease the culture time and especially the time spent in the callus phase. The successful postdoc candidate will work on
optimising tissue culture protocols for crop species relevant to the project
(i.e. wheat, barley, alfalfa and ryegrass). Along with improving regeneration procedures
genome editing methods will be applied. Part of the
work will be in direct cooperation with breeding companies involved in
commercial breeding of the five crop species.
PhD degree in molecular biology, crop breeding or any other project relevant
scientific research experience in:
of one or more of the mentioned species
knowledge in CRISPR/Cas9 or related gene editing technologies
in mutant screens
organizational skills and a detail-oriented structured work approach
interpersonal and communication skills

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the
agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of
Professional Associations on Academics in the State.
The starting salary is currently up to DKK
426,625 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 72,950). Negotiation
for salary supplement is possible.
