Associate Professor of Cellular Stress Signaling
University of Copenhagen
Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine
The University of Copenhagen, Center for Healthy Aging, Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine (ICMM), invites applications for a five-year Associate Professorship.
The Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine focuses on basic cellular and molecular biological processes, their regulation and their significance for cell function, interaction and organization in tissues. The Department offers comprehensive undergraduate and graduate teaching programs spanning cell biology, genetics and basic human biology, including chemistry, biochemistry, physiology, as well as anatomy. The position also carries an obligation to conduct some undergraduate teaching and associated examinations. You can read more at www.icmm.ku.dk and http://healthyaging.ku.dk/
Brief project description
The healthy life of the human organism depends on the long-term fitness of its smallest basal constituents, our cells. When deregulated, the pathologic accumulation of genetic mutations and malfunctioning macromolecules alters or compromises cellular function to promote cancer or premature ageing. Conversely, normal ageing of the human organism is associated with the time-dependent decrease in cellular fitness, caused by gradual loss of genomic integrity, and accumulation of misfolded and dysfunctional macromolecules.
To protect cells from harmful environmental effects, all organisms have developed elaborate surveillance and response mechanisms to counteract such threats. The aim of the research is to understand the molecular details of these pathways, with an emphasis on MAP kinase induced cellular stress responses. Such work is expected to uncover novel insights into the all-important mechanisms of cellular maintenance and adaptation, which may ultimately be exploited therapeutically to prevent or remedy aging-related diseases.
