The Division of Cell and Gene Therapy of the Center for Translational Neuromedicine (CTN) is looking for an experienced and highly motivated Research Assistant to join the Leukodystrophies work group. The successful candidate must be interested and engaged academically in neuroscience, particularly in its translational applications. This position targets candidates with a Master’s degree interested in gaining more experience prior to pursuing an academic career in Neuroscience.

Our research team
The Center for Translational Neuromedicine is part of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, and is located in the Panum Institute. For more information, visit The successful candidate will integrate the Leukodystrophies group, which focus is the study of the congenital disorders of myelin primarily affecting children. We generate humanized cell-based models of glial and myelin disorders with the goal to understand disease pathogenesis and to develop treatment strategies deemed to be clinically translatable. We are interested in defining the differences in the dynamic regulation of genes and signaling pathways in glial cells, as a way to identify novel therapeutic targets and strategies. We evaluate the behavior of affected cells in vivo upon transplantation in the mouse brain with the ultimate goal to assess the feasibility of replacing them by “healthy” glial progenitor cells, generating a proof of concept for cell-based therapies.

Job description and responsibilities
We are looking for a candidate who will be performing daily experiments in the group and who will integrate our team as an interactive member, bringing enthusiasm and ideas to the work being developed. Prior experience in neuroscience is mandatory. Ability to interpret the experimental results and formulate plans integrated with the up-to-date literature in the field is expected.

The experiments conducted in the group involve primarily (but are not limited to):

  • Culture of human pluripotent stem cells and its derivation towards glial fate (the main focus in the first months)
  • Flow cytometry
  • DNA and RNA extraction
  • PCR and qPCR
  • Immunocytochemistry and immunohistochemistry
  • Mouse brain surgery (certificate to work with animals within the Danish universities is mandatory)
  • Cryopreservation and cryosectioning of biological materials
  • Fluorescence microscopy and data analysis

Experience with all or as many of the techniques listed above is highly desirable. Additionally, proactivity and independence to setup and troubleshoot new protocols as new experiments are designed is expected to be taken as an attractive challenge. Upon starting the contract, an initial period of training will follow until the candidate reaches familiarity and independency with the lab’s protocols. The ability to find a balance between learning fast and working independently, in one hand, while being able to freely ask questions when unsure about some aspects of the work is extremely important for the well-functioning of the team.

The group is currently composed of a group leader, two research assistants and one scholarship student. We aim to expand the group to allow the investigation of more leukodystrophies. The team is hard-working and the work environment is friendly and cooperative among the team members.

  • Qualifications
    Master’s degree in Human Biology or similar field
  • Prior experience and interest in neuroscience
  • Highly motivated candidate, passionate by science and driven to be part of translational efforts
  • Language: fluent in English (written and verbal)
  • Good scientific writing in English
  • FELASA certificate for animal use
  • Well-organized, independent and pro-active
  • Mature and calm under pressure

Employment conditions
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff. Terms of appointment and payment is according to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

Working hours are 37 hours per week. Flexibility to adjust the schedule to the timings of experiments is expected and very important.

This is a one-year position, with the possibility of extension after the one-year assessment.

The successful candidate will report to Assistant Professor Joana Osorio (group leader) and Professor Steve Goldman (Principal Investigator).
