Postdoc in Super-resolution ultrasound Imaging: Visualization of Changes in Renal Vascular Structure during Development of Diabetic Kidney Disease
We invite applications for a postdoc position in the field of renal physiology, vascular physiology, and super-resolution imaging as per July 1st 2025, or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is a fixed-term full time position ending on February 28th 2027.
We are looking for an exceptional candidate with interdisciplinary skills: animal experimentation, ex vivo and in vivo imaging, and advanced data analysis. It is crucial that the candidate has experience in working in an interdisciplinary environment.
Information on the department can be found at: https://bmi.ku.dk/
About the research project
The kidney links cardiovascular and metabolic systems through regulation of the water-salt balance, hormone release, and blood pressure. During disease states such as diabetes and hypertension, the structure and function of the renal vasculature changes, but we do not know much about where and when the initial damage occurs. In this project, the successful applicant will develop a methodology to extract information about the renal microcirculatory structure using super-resolution ultrasound and µCT to understand how diabetic kidney disease begins and how new anti-diabetic drugs (SGLT-2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists) provides renoprotection. The project is funded by the European Research Council (ERC).
This project brings together a team of experts in physiology, imaging and advanced data analysis. The candidate will perform science across physiological, engineering and computational specialities.

- You have a PhD, preferably within one of the following areas: physiology, biology, bioengineering, biomedical sciences;
- You must have basic knowledge of vascular and/or renal physiology;
- You must be skilled in surgical preparation (surgical exposure of the kidney, tracheotomy, blood vessel cannulation) of animal models (rodents)
- You must hold a valid FELASA certification or corresponding certification allowing you to work with living animals.
- You must have experience in working with imaging techniques e.g. Ultrasound, µCT or Laser Speckle Flowmetry
- You must have good programming skills in MATLAB/ PYTHON;
- You have an active interest in interdisciplinary research;
- You have good English skills, both written and spoken.
